Computer History – A British View – Part 1 of 3

A British film about computers from 1969. It is presented here as a historical look at how computers used to be in the 1960's when PC's and Macs were over 10 years away. Shown in three parts. Sorry, but the 16mm print is rather battered! To my surprise this clip was featured in 'The Guardian' newspaper's Technology supplement on Thursday December 6th 2007.

Here's a bit of computer history and humor with one of Compaq Computer's ads. Compaq was trying to show its computer was compatible with IBM's personal computer. The ad showcases John Cleese comparing the Compaq Computer with a dead fish. See if you get the connection... and the dry humor.

  1. @dragonwar524 They are weak and insignificant, that is why they are most likely to get nuked than USA, Russia, etc..

  2. @WarmongerWW3 iran is the only poor and weak country then?

  3. @dragonwar524 oh really? so why the new Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) excludes Iran?

  4. Is it me or does every single person in this film fit some kind of stereotype “pigeon hole”? The banker, the farmer, the professor etc. These days its hard to do that.

  5. @WarmongerWW3 actually only they would not as they dont have any so they are not a threat so countries with nukes would be targeted before they got targeted themselves (or it would be cold war 2)

  6. @dragonwar524 Only poor and weak countries will be nuked.

  7. @WarmongerWW3 none wel get nuked

  9. HOW ABOUT WE DO SOMETHING REALLY BRAVE…

& STAND UP TO THE ISRAEL/AMERICA PACT OVER PALESTINE!

Palestinians have to live on only 15% of regular supplies DUE TO THE ILLEGAL ISRAELI BLAOCKADE WHICH HAS STOOD FOR DECADES.

Or are we just another U.S. lap dog state now?

  12. The era of modern computers owes much to the major advances made during the WW2 because of the war. Now imagine the spectacular machines that WW3 will create.

  14. Computers???Whatever happened to them!!!!

  15. To put Prof Sutherland’s comments in context, I googled his name and his university. The 1st page results included a google books page of New Scientist 9 Dec 1982 on which was highlighted an advert for a Post-doc in his research group. That’s so obscure as to be amazing, imagine what the chances would be of finding that information ten years ago.

Apparently, he was/is and experimental psychologist.

  16. Well done Prof. Sutherland, spot on.

Not sure if the information revolution is quite as profound as the industrial revolution though…. that said the we’re in the middle of it; I imagine it’ll take another 150 years before it can be looked on with any perspective.
